The Maastrichtian record from Shatsky Rise (northwest Pacific): A tropical perspective on global ecological and oceanographic changes

چکیده
[1] We present new isotopic and micropaleontological data from a depth transect on Shatsky Rise that record the response of the tropical Pacific to global biotic and oceanographic shifts during the mid-Maastrichtian. Results reveal a coupling between the upper ocean, characterized by a weak thermocline and low to intermediate productivity, and intermediate waters. During the earliest Maastrichtian, oxygen and neodymium isotope data suggest a significant contribution of relatively warm intermediate water from the North Pacific. Isotopic shifts through the early Maastrichtian suggest that this warmer water mass was gradually replaced by cooler waters originating in the Southern Ocean. Although the cooler water mass remained dominant through the remainder of the Maastrichtian, it was displaced intermittently at shallow intermediate depths by North Pacific intermediate water. The globally recognized ‘‘mid-Maastrichtian event’’ 69 Ma, manifested by the brief appearance of abundant inoceramid bivalves over shallow portions of Shatsky Rise, is characterized by an abrupt increase ( 2 –3 C) in sea surface temperatures, a greater flux of organic matter out of the surface ocean, and warmer ( 4 C) intermediate waters. Results implicate simultaneous changes in surface waters and the sources/ distribution patterns of intermediate water masses as an underlying cause for widespread biotic and oceanographic changes during mid-Maastrichtian time.

Cretaceous evolution of the genus Adercotryma (Foraminifera) in the deep Pacific
Adercotryma glomeratum is one of the most geographically and bathymetrically widespread species of Recent deep-sea benthic foraminifera, but the evolutionary history of this distinct agglutinated species is poorly known. In addition to one or two Recent species probably closely related to A. glomeratum, the Eocene-Oligocene species Adercotryma agterbergi has been described, but we suggest that ...

[1] Stable isotope and elemental measurements were conducted on foraminifera from a sequence of calcareous pelagic ooze at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1209 to document the thermal evolution of the North Pacific water column over Shatsky Rise and to address long-standing questions about the nature of oceanic circulation in the early Paleogene. A major change in seasonality and water column struc...
متن کاملHolocene variability in the intensity of wind-gap upwelling in the tropical eastern Pacific
Wind-driven upwelling in Pacific Panamá is a significant source of oceanographic variability in the tropical eastern Pacific. This upwelling system provides a critical teleconnection between the Atlantic and tropical Pacific that may impact climate variability on a global scale. Despite its importance to oceanographic circulation, ecology, and climate, little is known about the long-term stabil...
متن کاملDivergent ecological effects of oceanographic anomalies on terrestrial ecosystems of the Mexican Pacific coast.
Precipitation pulses are essential for the regeneration of drylands and have been shown to be related to oceanographic anomalies. However, whereas some studies report increased precipitation in drylands in northern Mexico during El Niño years, others report increased drought in the southern drylands. To elucidate the effect of oceanographic/atmospheric anomalies on moisture pulses along the who...
